Thank you for evaluating Instant Update. Below you will find some helpful hints for getting the most from the product.
----------------------------------
EVALUATION ISSUES
----------------------------------
The evaluation version of Instant Update will stop working 45 days after it is installed. Each time a user signs in, an alert will inform him of how many days remain in the evaluation period. At the end of the evaluation period, users will not be able to sign in to their Instant Update Workgroups.
To upgrade to version 1.0, the evaluation versions of Instant Update Extension, Instant Update Server, Instant Update Admin, and the Instant Update application need to be replaced. The workgroups and their databases will be intact when the servers are restarted with the non-evaluation version of the Instant Update Server.
Steps to upgrade Instant Update:
1) Drag Instant Update Extension from the Extensions folder in the System folder onto the desktop. (From the System folder for System 6). Restart.
2) Drag Instant Update Extension and the Instant Update application into the trash. Empty the trash.
3) Follow the instructions on page 1-2 of the Instant Update User's Guide to install the user software.
4) You cannot sign in until the Administrator has created registrations. Once users have been registered, you will be able to access all of your documents.

NEW FEATURES

Holding down the command and period keys will cancel updates taking longer than 30 seconds.
The Help key or Control-E will open the online Instant Update Quick Reference.
------------------------------------
COMPATIBILITY
------------------------------------
Adobe Type Reunion 1.0.1 has the following inconsistencies with Instant Update under System 7.0:
• The last item on the font menu can be truncated.
• The Instant Update Quick Reference window will not display from the System 7 help menu. To enable, hold down the Shift key before clicking the menu.
Timbuktu/Remote 2.0.1 will not display color icons when the emulated Macintosh is in either color mode or in gray scale mode. To correct the problem, select the "Black and White" option in the Monitors control panel of the emulated Macintosh.
------------------------------------
MEMORY REQUIREMENT
------------------------------------
The default memory requirement for the Instant Update application is set to 768K. For a Macintosh with 2 megabytes of memory or less (especially if it is running System 7.0), the system may issue a warning that the amount of memory requested by Instant Update is not available, and will suggest a smaller size. If you encounter this, you may wish to reduce the memory requirements of Instant Update to 512K. You can do this by selecting the Instant Update application from the Finder, choosing "Get Info" from the File menu, and changing the number in the box in the lower right corner.

PROBLEM SOLVING
------------------------------------
This section provides answers to some questions you may encounter using Instant Update.
Q: Can I drag more than one document into a folder in Document Management?
A: No. If, when you click to drag a document, more than one document is selected, the selection is changed to the document you clicked and that one document is dragged.
Q: Can I drag a document into my personal folder?
A: No. Your personal folder is where documents you create or are sent to you are originally placed. You can move documents out of this folder to other folders on your disk, but you cannot move them back to your personal folder.
Q: I opened Instant Update and an alert was displayed telling me to Scan Disks to find one or more of my Instant Update documents. What does this mean?
A: The Document Manager has lost track of some of your documents. This happens, for example, when a disk drive is removed, or an Instant Update document is renamed or moved via the Finder in System 6. Scan Disks searches for all Instant Update documents, and displays them in the Document Manager.
Q: Will Scan Disks show my documents to other users?
A: The Scan Disks command finds local documents created by the user that is signed in. Documents created by other users are not shown.
Q: Can I import my style sheets from Microsoft Word™?
A: Not directly, but it is possible to recreate styles from any compatible word processor in Instant Update:
Step 1: Copy your document into Instant Update using either the clipboard or the Open dialog with the "Allow Importing" option turned on.
Step 2: In Instant Update, select a paragraph or a range of text that has the style you want to recreate.
Step 3: Invoke Define Style. Review the description of the style in the dialog. If it is correct, give your style a name and click Define.
Repeat steps two and three for each style you want to recreate in Instant Update.
Q: Can I import documents that includes tables?
A: Tables cannot be imported with the Open command. Use the Clipboard to copy a table into Instant Update. This will work with tables from both word processors and spreadsheets.
Q: Can I work on documents at home or away from the office?
A: Yes, when the sign-in dialog appears, select Work Offline. You can access the Document Management window, create new documents, and open existing documents and make modifications. You will not be able to Update until you sign in again.
Q: If I modify a document, but I am not finished, can I save the changes without "sending" them to the other participants?
A: Yes. Use the Save command to save the document without sending your changes. The Document Management window shows the document with a gray outgoing arrow to indicate the document contains unsent changes.
Q: I want to transfer ownership of a document and the list of users that comes up doesn't include the person I'm looking for. Why not?
A: You can only transfer ownership of a document to a user in your workgroup. The list that comes up includes only the users in your workgroup.
Q: Is there a maximum number of users that can participate in a document?
A: No, there is no maximum number of users that can participate in a document.
Q: What's the difference between Revert to Saved and Revert to Master?
A: Revert to Saved discards any changes you have made to a document during an editing session and reverts the document to the last saved version, which was the last time you used the Save or Update command. The operation is entirely local and does not affect the master document or other users.
Revert to Master replaces the local copy of a document with a current copy of the master document. It discards any changes you've made to the local copy since the last Update command. You would use this command if you have made changes to your local copy of a document, and have saved them locally using the Save command, but you decide that you do not wish to share those changes with the other participants. For a local document with no outgoing changes, Revert to Master is a slow version of the Update command.
Q: I'm trying to update my document and get an alert that my copy and the master copy are inconsistent. What does this mean?
A: There are some circumstances where your local copy can get ahead of the master document (e.g., the server's hard disk crashes and the administrator restores an old version of the master document from backup). To prevent data corruption, Instant Update does not allow you to Update the master copy under these circumstances. If you have local changes you wish to keep, use Detach from Master to create a new untitled copy of your document. Then, to bring your local copy in sync with the master, use Revert to Master.
Q: What does Detach from Master do, and why would I want to use it?
A: When the master copy of a document is deleted, your local copy will appear in the Document Management window with a broken document icon. If you want to distribute this document again, use Detach from Master to create a new untitled copy.
Q: If I delete an Instant Update document from the desktop (dragging it to the trash), and I'm its owner, what happens to the master? Is it automatically deleted?
A: Deleting the local copy of the document using the Finder does not delete the master copy.
